What happens if I send the wrong amount of SOL to a swap deposit address
If you send the wrong amount of SOL to a swap deposit address, the swap will fail. The exchanger’s system checks that the deposited amount matches the quoted amount within a narrow tolerance; anything outside that range is rejected.

Status: waiting for your deposit
You send from your own wallet straight to the exchanger — nothing to connect, no account, and you stay on this page throughout. Rates are indicative until a swap is opened.
The swap is carried out by an independent exchanger and the deposit address above is theirs. pubtoken.xyz never holds, receives or controls your funds, has no key to that address, and earns a referral commission. Opening a swap sends your receiving address, IP, browser and timezone to the exchanger for their compliance checks; we store none of it. Check their terms, fees and country restrictions before sending anything.
The exchanger does not hold your SOL indefinitely. When it detects a mismatch, it returns the funds to the wallet you sent from. This return is not automatic in the sense of instant - it happens after the system completes its validation cycle. Depending on network congestion, that can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. You do not need to contact support for a standard underpayment or overpayment. The return is triggered by the same logic that processes successful swaps.
What counts as “wrong” depends on the tolerance. Most exchangers permit a small variance, usually one or two percent, to account for network fees or slight timing differences in SOL price moves. If you send 9.8 SOL instead of the quoted 10 SOL, that may still process if the system allows a 2% underpayment. If you send 5 SOL when the quote was for 10, that will fail. The exact threshold is not published; it is part of the internal matching engine. The safe approach is to send exactly the amount shown in the swap quote, minus the network fee the exchanger deducts (which is displayed before you confirm).
A common cause of wrong amounts is forgetting that SOL transfers incur a small fee. If the quote asks for 10 SOL and your wallet shows 10.01 SOL, sending the full balance will overpay by 0.01 SOL. The exchanger may accept that as within tolerance, or it may reject it. To avoid ambiguity, send the precise quoted amount and leave the rest in your wallet.
Another scenario: you initiate a swap for 100 USDC, but the deposit address is for SOL. The exchanger expects SOL at that address. If you send USDC to a SOL address, the transaction will likely fail on the blockchain level - the address is valid for SOL only. The USDC may be lost, depending on whether the address is controlled by a contract that can interpret SPL tokens. Most exchange deposit addresses are simple SOL accounts. Sending a non-SOL token to them results in a permanent loss unless the exchanger has a recovery mechanism. This is rare. Always confirm you are sending the correct asset.
If you underpay or overpay and the swap fails, the returned SOL arrives back in your wallet as a standard incoming transaction. Check your transaction history on Solscan or a similar block explorer. The return transaction will show the same amount you sent, minus the network fee for the return. The exchanger does not charge extra for handling a failed swap; you only lose the blockchain fee for both the outgoing and the return transaction.
There is no penalty beyond those fees. You can retry the swap with the correct amount immediately. The exchange rate may have changed in the meantime, so you should request a new quote before sending again.
If the return does not appear after a reasonable time (30 minutes is typical on Solana, though validator performance varies), check the deposit address on a block explorer. If the funds left that address, they are on their way back. If the address still holds them, the exchanger’s system has not processed the failure yet. In that case, waiting longer is the only option. Contacting support rarely speeds this up, but you can open a ticket if more than an hour passes.
This process is specific to moving SOL between blockchains through an exchanger rather than using a decentralised exchange directly. For a broader explanation of how these swaps work and why they differ from on-chain trading, see the hub page “Swapping Solana tokens without a DEX”. That page covers the overall flow and when this method makes sense.
